St. Pius X Church, Piusnagar (Formerly known as Halealve Church) dedicated to Saint Pius X, is located in Hanglur village of Kundapura Taluk, Udupi District, comprising parts of Halealve, Hanglur, Kodi and Koteshwar villages. It is situated at about 3km from Kundapura. This Parish was carved out from the Kundapura Parish. Rev. Fr. Casmir D'Sa was the First Parish Priest of the Parish who laid of a firm foundation of faith and discipline.
St Pius X Parish was established in 1959 and the existing church building was blessed in 1961. Since then the Parish has seen a lot of development under the leadership of nine enthusiastic Parish Priests and with the cooperation of the people.
During Rev. Fr. Antony John D'Souza’s period the Parish got the new name, Piusnagar Parish, Fr. D’Souza was succeeded by Rev Fr. Jacob Crasta, During Fr. Crasta’s tenure many of the parish associations like Altar boys, CYM, CLC, Legion of Mary, The third Order of St. Francis Assisi, St Vincent D’ Paul society, Christopher Association, came into being. The German church bell with its tower was erected during his epoch. He was succeeded by Rev. Fr. Sylvester D'Souza, an outgoing priest, who kept harmonious relations with non-Catholics for the welfare of the whole society. During his tenure the Parish saw the benefit of AICUF & CODP. During the time the first parish bulletin “PEN” was published. During Fr. Sylvester’s term, the Parish celebrated the Silver Jubilee. The Silver Jubilee project of building a Church Hall was started, and it saw its completion during the time of the next Parish Priest, Rev Fr. Vincent D'Souza. During his era the major part of the renovation of the church and the building of the new presbytery were done. During his period the Parish bulletin was renamed MILAN, and he also built a beautiful new grotto. Fr. Vincent D’Souza was succeeded by Rev. Fr. Maxim Noronha.
During Fr. Noronha’s period reconstruction of the Sacristy was done. An English medium school which is now St. Pius X school run by St. Ann’s of Providence Sisters and Koteshwar chapel which is now St. Antony’s Church, Koteshwar are his main contributions to the Parish and the community. Fr. Noronha was succeeded by Rev. Fr. Wilfred Gonsalves, and during his period the Parish witnessed a lot of welfare measures for the poor and the needy. Fr. Wilfred Gonsalves was succeeded by the young and dynamic Priest Rev Fr. John Walter Mendonca, during whose period the Church celebrated its Golden Jubilee and as a Golden Jubilee Project, the church was modernized as one of the most beautiful churches in the whole diocese. As this Parish got bigger, Koteshwar Parish was carved out of Piusnagar Church in 2011.
Fr. Mendonca was succeeded by the present Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. John Alfred Barboza in 2015.
St. Pius X English Medium School commenced in the year 1997. The school made a remarkable progress due to the hard work of the St. Ann's of Providence sisters who took up the school in 1998, after setting up their convent in the parish. The classes reached up to Std. X and now the parishners are looking forward to seeing it to grow into a Junior College.
A Calvary scene has been erected at the entrance of the church compound. The titular feast of St. Pius X is celebrated every year on 21st of August. The Parish Feast is celebrated in the 2nd week of January with the Confraternity Sunday on the preceding Sunday, and celebration of the vespers on the eve of the feast. Major events including cultural shows take place in the evening of the Parish Feast Day.
